Eyelash extensions can be intimidating. Sticking tools so close to your eyeball, plus all the dos and don’ts that come with a set of extensions. Just because you don’t know the process doesn’t mean you should hold back on framing those gorgeous eyes; they are the window to the soul, after all.

We know some of our customers want to know the nitty-gritty details before committing to an eyelash extension appointment. So before you take the plunge, here are all your eyelash extension questions answered. Once you have a set of eyelash extensions fluttering away, you’ll forget any of the doubts you ever had.

First things first, what are eyelash extensions?

Gone are the days when falsies were the only way to achieve the dramatic lashes of your dreams. A qualified lash technician applies these super-fine synthetic lash extensions to the natural eyelash with special lash adhesive. Unlike those strip party falsies, these last longer than 24 hours.

How long do eyelash extensions last?

It’s important to remember your eyelashes grow in and out in cycles. Whilst everyone’s is different, these cycles usually occur every 60 to 90 days. This means the average human can shed up to 20% of their natural lashes every two weeks.

Typically, eyelash extensions will last from 4-6 weeks with some touch-ups in between, usually every 2-3 weeks to fit into these cycles.

How long do eyelash extensions take?

Applying eyelash extensions can take anywhere between 1.5 hours to 3 hours, depending on the style and shape of eyelashes you want to achieve. Generally, the technician will take between 1 to 2 hours for a classic and a little longer for a  volume lash extension set.

Can you wet eyelash extensions?

Yes, you can get them wet 5 minutes after your set has been complete, these days the adhesives are super quick dry and in fact you will see better retention if you wash them regularly, this is important to keep the body natural oils away from your investment.

What should I avoid with eyelash extensions?

Please avoid any products that contain oil, including facial cleansers and moisturisers and even be careful of shampoos that coat the hair with a barrier. Another thing to avoid is picking them or trying to remove yourself, the bond is very strong and you could damage your natural lashes.

Don’t reach for oil-based cleansers and products around the eye area while you have eyelash extensions, as oils are known to weaken the ingredients in lash adhesives. Avoid rubbing your eyes and using cotton buds and other similar materials which can tug at the lashes. We want to preserve these extensions, not pull them out prematurely.

You can skip the mascara now, you don’t need it! Plus, applying mascara to eyelash extensions will tug at the adhesives and damage the extension application. If you are desperate to add some volume with a lick of mascara, maybe opt for a more voluminous set of eyelash extensions next time? Inquire with your lash technician on their range available.

Should I wash my eyelash extensions?

Yes! What a great question! Not enough eyelash extension enthusiasts know the importance of keeping your lashes clean. Your lash line isn’t as clean as you think. Like all areas on our skin, it gets oil and accumulates dirt and debris, if you wash your hair you should wash your lashes!

Natural lashes grow from a hair follicle and this is where your body produces natural oils and sebum to moisturise each hair, this oil, combined with daily dirt or makeup can block the hair follicle and wreak havoc on the natural lash growth.

How do I wash my eyelash extensions?

Wash those lashes daily. Even twice daily if you wear heavy makeup! Lash Sublime have the perfect lash cleanser that has a gentle ph level for the delicate eye area, but effective at removing daily makeup and dirt.

After cleansing your face avoiding the eye area, wet your lashes with water. With an eyelash spooly, apply eyelash cleanser to the lashes, gently rinsing off with water. Pat dry with a towel and use a clean brush to comb through. Too easy!

Do eyelash extensions cause damage to your natural lashes?

A common misconception of eyelash extensions is thinking they will make your eyelashes fall out. As long as you are getting your lash extension fix at a qualified lash technician, they will not be damaging your natural lashes. Lash technicians are trained to carefully apply extensions one at a time to each lash. We train our lash technicians to identify what stage of the growth cycle a natural lash is at and apply the extensions accordingly. This way, the lash can fall freely with the extension attached to it.
